The Whole is More Than the Sum of its Parts: Holistic Health?

With all of the recent debate about health care costs, insurance companies, and pharmaceuticals, it is easy to focus on the topic of health as it pertains to visits to the doctor. However, practitioners of holistic health have known for centuries that there is more to good health than an annual check-up, and that everyday patterns of behavior can have beneficial or harmful effects on human health as surely as catching any flu bug. The word holistic comes from the Greek work holos, meaning whole. Holistic health approaches the human body as more than just the functioning of its physical parts. Holistic health concerns itself with the health of a person's mind, body, and spirit, with the goal of increasing energy and happiness. Mind: Caring for the mind means caring for mental health and emotional health. Mental health deals with states of mind. Everyone experiences stress, frustration, and conflict in their life, and the link between stress and physical health has been proven time and time again. Focusing on mental and emotional health means learning to eliminate sources of stress, when possible, or, if not possible, learning to manage these feelings as to minimize their negative impact. It also can involve identifying situations that are mentally draining without reward, harmful relationships, and solving financial problems. Body: Physical health is very important to the health of any organism. Focusing on physical health means concentrating on getting adequate exercise, sleeping enough every night, eating healthy foods, and maintaining an ideal weight. Environmental health is also crucial to physical health. Drinking clean water, breathing clean air, and creating a tranquil home environment are very important to maintaining good health from a holistic standpoint. Spirit: The third and final major component of holistic health is spiritual health. Good spiritual health does not necessarily mean the practicing of a religion, but it has been shown that meditation, emphasizing feelings of gratitude, yoga, or even appreciating nature all have important positive spiritual and emotional benefits. Also important to spiritual health is social health, participating in activities that give a sense of community ties, spending time with friends and family, or intimate relationships.
