Mao Zedong believed in equality through communism. The reason why all those peasants supported him was because they yearned for equality, where the rich and the poor were treated the same. The rich, who supported Chiang Kai Shek, fled with Chiang Kai Shek to what we call nowadays, Taiwan. Mao Zedong took the belongings of the rich and bequeathed them to the poor. He believed that communism would be successful if there was equality.
