He also loved learning and studied ancient classical Greek, Latin, French and Spanish literature, as well as Arabian poetry.

He graduated in 1829 number two in his class, and with not one demerit in the four years he was there. He then entered the service of the U.S. Army Engineer Corps.He played a very important role in the Mexican American War. He served until the Civil War began.He was offered Command of all Union Forces but opted to resign rather than fighting against his home state of Virginia.He then offered his service to Virginia and thus to the Confederacy.
