I saw a painting that was signed by lee supposedly and was appraised for 40,000. It was of a cabin in winter in Virginia at night with a town in the background. It was awful. I'm not an artist, but it was pretty bad.

Robert E. Lee was a proficient artist who loved to paint.

He also loved learning and studied ancient classical Greek, Latin, French and Spanish literature, as well as Arabian poetry.

As a history scholar, he was also an admirer of Julius Caesar, whose campaigns he thoroughly studied, particularly strategical and tactical principles related to the use of the field fortification and strategic intimidation, which were his source of inspiration during his own military campaigns.

I am not sure how young you mean, but when he was 18 he entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1825. He graduated in 1829 number two in his class, and with not one demerit in the four years he was there. He then entered the service of the U.S. Army Engineer Corps. He played a very important role in the Mexican American War. He served until the Civil War began. He was offered Command of all Union Forces but opted to resign rather than fighting against his home state of Virginia. He then offered his service to Virginia and thus to the Confederacy.

Most of what is found on Lee deals with his military side. No one seems to have understood him completely. Dr. Douglas Southhall Freeman, his chief biographer, said, " I can account for every hour of Lee's life from the day he went to West Point until his death.....but I never presumed I know what General Lee was thinking."
Long before the war he would like to get into bed with his children and read to them aloud. They had to take turns tickling the soles of his feet, which he enjoyed. When they stopped he would say "No tickling, no story." Years later while at war he got news of the death of his daughter Annie. His secretary saw him take the news without a change of expression, but later he was seen with his head on his camp desk sobbing. For months at the height of the war he had a pet hen that laid an egg under his cot each day and he never forgot to leave the tent flap open for her. The hen traveled with the army. In the invasion of Gettysburg she got lost and all including Lee searched for his pet. He wasn't content until she was perched in his headquarters wagon. He often played Chess and soldiers once watched him as he dismounted under fire at Petersburg to pick up a fallen baby bird and put it in its nest. In heavy firing of the opening battle of The Wilderness a courier was startled to get a scolding for having mistreated his horse by riding so fast. Lee took a buttered biscuit from his saddlebag and fed the horse before turning attention to the battle.
