The Legio VII was one of the seven legions available to Pompey the Great in 65 BC, before he took over the Command of the Third Mithridatic War and when he started numbering the legions. It was, together with the VI, VIII and IX, one of the legions he levied in Hispania. It was eployed by Julius Caesar in his Gallic Wars and at the balle of Pharsalus and Pharsalus against Pompey .

It was given the cognomen of Claudia Pia Fedelis (Claudian loyal and faithful) in 42 BC because it put down a rebellion against the newly proclaimed emperor Claudius by the governor of Dalmatia, the province where it was stationed. Prior to that its cognomen was Paterna or Mecedonica.
