Best Answer

John Tyler signed a treaty to annex Texas in April of 1844. Texas declared independence in 1836, but was not recognized as independent by the Mexican government. The US did not intervene when Mexico sent troops back into Texas. There was resistance to annexing Texas to the US because it allowed slavery.
