David Glasgow Farragut. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, but he had been in the US Navy for a great many years and did not go south when the war started. He and another Union naval commander forced the surrender of New Orleans in 1862.
He receives the credit for shutting down Mobile, Alabama in August, 1864.

∙ 9y agoAdmiral David Farragut is the naval officer who helped capture New Orleans. Farragut also aided General Ulysses S. Grant at Vicksburg, and won a victory for the Union at the Battle of Mobile Bay.

And, New Orleans was an important city for the Union to capture and most of the credit does go to Admiral David Farragut along with the assistance of Admiral David Dixon Porter. They gathered a fleet of 17 warships and 19 mortar boats and bombarded the city and its protecting forts of Jackson and St. Philip. In mid-April for six days the Union fleet commenced a firing barrage on a 24 hour per day basis, until on April 24, 1862, the city surrendered. Early in May, Union General Benjamin A. Butler occupied the city with his army.
