It is important to note that the Somme offensive of 1916 lasted five months and turned out to be another costly inconclusive battle.
The British bore the principal burden of the Somme offensive, attacking on a fourteen mile front. The French army struck on a front of nine miles. The British began the offensive with a bombardment of seven days with over 1.6 million shells fired at German defenses.
On the first day of battle the British suffered 57,000 casualties.
