Desktop Cleanup Wizard
To Eliminate desktop Clutter. Windows XP periodically moves unused desktop icons into a folder named Unused Desktop Shortcuts.
To remove unused items from the desktop in Windows, a user can use the Desktop Cleanup Wizard, located in Control Panel > Appearances and Themes > Display.
Unused icons are programs on your desktop that you have not opened for a while. Windows notifies you that you haven't used them in a while and will want to create a folder and put them all in for you to clear clutter.
It's something called "Desktop Cleanup", and it's moved your unused icons into a special unused icons folder. You have to find the desktop options and turn it off.
Windows is usually configured by default to clean your desktop of unused and rarely used icons every 60 days. You can change this setting by Right-Clicking your desktop, then click properties, select Desktop tab, then select the button Customise Desktop. Here you need to untick the box that says Run Desktop Cleanup every 60 days.

you need a user account with administrator privileges first. from there go to "start", click on "run". type in "msconfig" in the space and enter. You will be able to access the applications that run on start up. uncheck the ones you do not want to start immediately.
Windows 98 discs do not need to be activated, and yes, they can still be used to upgrade an older installation of Windows.

i would also like to know this, i have an unused desktop computer and i was wondering if i could use my xbox 360 wireless adaptor on it to connect to my router, as the desktop doesnt have a wifi card installed, an answer would be great !!
