A U-2 was a spy plane I believe which was shot down by the Russians in the 1950's and a pilot named Gary Powers was held prisoner by the Russians. I think they eventually released him but it was an embarrasment for the Eisenhower administration. Eisenhower was the President of the United States in 1955 when I was born.
