"The Straw that broke the camel's back" was when he attacked Poland. After annexing Austria and Czechoslovakia, France and Great Britain drew the line. And as he attacked Poland on Sept. 1, 1939 they gave him a ultimatum to draw back by Sept. 3 and when he didn't do this France and GB declared war on Germany. What was first only a European War mutated to the WW II when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and Hitler - as an ally of Germany - declared war on the US on Dec. 11, 1941 (although he had no obligations to do so because Japan wasn't attacked - it was the other way around).
