Here are some things I've always found helpful to cheer up a friend.
1) Talk to them! Sometimes (especially during the teen years), people feel like they're isolated from the rest of the world. Show them that they're not by striking up a conversation. If they're not interested in conversation, keep reading.
2) Listen, don't talk. Perhaps they have a problem of some sort that you could help with. And it's always nice to be asked, "What's the matter?" when you're down.
3) Avoid saying things like, "I know how you feel." Everyone deals with sadness differently, and you probably don't know how they feel. Comfort them as best you can.
4) Take them out to do something. Dinner, roller skating, Water Polo - it doesn't really matter. Just take a genuine interest in them
5) Use laughter to your advantage if you've got a good sense of humor. Laughter is the best medicine.
And if all else fails...
6) Give them some space. Some people get over they're depression if they're left alone with their thoughts.
Remember, if you ever think a friend is sad to the point of being suicidal, don't hesitate to call someone - the police, a friend, or a mental health hotline. I'll leave a few numbers you can dial in case of an emergency. You might just save your friends life.

By being there. Your friend probably just needs somebody to listen to them and not try to judge or "fix" things or anything else. Just let them vent and get it out of their system.

One of the best ways to cheer up a friend who lost a job is to point out all the positive things one has learned and the experience gained from the job that nobody can take away. Such a conversation might take place while treating the friend to dinner or a pleasant indulgence of their liking.
