Mao consolidated the food production, trade, and transportation systems of China, and eliminated almost all internal political divisions (along with many hereditary rulers and aristocrats). This allowed the country to benefit from its power of production and further expand its industrial base, without competition from either within China or from other nations. Although credited with establishing China as a stable, industrialized, unified state, Mao only did so by imposing complete cultural and political control over China's citizens.

One of the many things Mao did was rapidly industrialize China. This was done, however, at great expense to the Chinese people and at the price of their liberties and sometimes even their lives.

A delicate and touchy question.

He did much harm. Possibly as much as 100 million deaths could be credibly attributed to him and his policies.

That said, he kept the Western Powers from meddling with, exploiting, robbing and hurting China any more.

He forced an industrialization that while difficult, was difficult for all other nations. (And while he possibly made it harder than it needed to be, he did get it done.)

He also kept the Soviet Union out of China's affairs, and made sure that it was independent of their influence, trickery and exploitation.

He restored China's pride in itself, and laid the groundwork for it to have the breathing room to become what it is now - a world power, that the world just hasn't fully noticed yet.
