I'm sorry, for he is apparently a friend of your's, and he is in for a rough time.
1. Do not argue with the guards.
2. Avoid, in a non-wimpy way, confrontations with other inmates.
3. Try to avoid making enemies by sticking to your own business and doing your time.
4. Find a goal. Get that degree. Learn a craft. Don't sit dwelling on what you'll do with your life when you're out - this IS your life, and for probably some years. Do something now.
5. Go the church services. It does sound cheesy, but you can go for good reasons. It passes time. Looks good to the parole board. Gives you some like minded people who are looking to avoid crap, too.
6. You don't know anything about the wrong doing of others. You are blind to it. You have nothing to say about it. You'll go to solitary before speaking of it.
7. Do not become involved in any prison controversy, or reform movement, or lawsuit. Do your time, and don't worry about how bad the prison is.
8. As to the one thing on his mind - yeah, it happens. Sometimes being in a gang can minimize this. Sometimes having one strong protector can. Sometimes fighting back can make it happen less - and sometimes make it happen more. Avoid being alone. And do not turn in any who did it. It won't help.
