She contracted the "Crimean Fever" at 38, leaving her bedridden for the rest of her life. She continued advocating for health care reform - sanitation and safety in hospitals. She is viewed as the mother of modern nursing through her use of studying new methods and collecting statistics of improvements. A year later, in 1859, she published a book called Notes on Hospitals. Throughout the rest of her life, she was productive via correspondence . One project included consulting on US Civil War field hospitals and starting a Nursing College. She died in August of 1910 at age 90. So in a sense, even though she was not physically nursing, she never stopped supporting the development of nursing as a profession.
