But, this can vary, depending on their birthday, the cutoff date for starting school in their state.
The cutoff is usually September 1st, so if school starts in late August like it does in many places, then the very youngest students will still be 10, but they'll turn 11 within a couple weeks of school starting. But some states would make it possible for kids to be 10 for a couple months or even almost half of their 6th grade year. A couple states don't even require a kindergartner to turn 5 until December.
In some cases, a kid could already be 12 starting 6th grade. Sometimes the cutoff date is before school starts (either it's in August, or maybe September 1st if school doesn't actually start till September), to esnure that NO child will still be 4 on their first day of kindergarten. So by 6th grade, everyone would have to be at least 11, and the oldest students would already be 12 on the first day of school.
