Although many tried before him, Igor Sikorsky invented and flew the world's first helicopter in the 1930's. And with Rex Beisel he co-invented the Vought F4U Corsair fighter used by the Allies in the Second World War. The unusual design of the F4U made it difficult to take off and land, but once in the sky it was nearly unmatched. Other inventions by Sikorsky probably would have pertained to flying as well, but not necessarily. [Alberto Santos-Dumont was an early aviator and aircraft designer, and his greatest invention was the wrist watch. Both hands were needed for flying airplanes and airships in those days, and a pocket watch was impractical.]
