Present day France is the ancient Roman region called Gaul. In ancient times, this was an area of Western Europe that along with France included parts of Italy, Belgium and Switzerland. This part of Europe was under Roman rule for five centuries until 486 A.D.

there are traces of human occupation in the spot where is now located Paris, dating back 4000 B.C. The town of Marseille was founded as a Greek colony around the year 600 B.C., but it is quite difficult to say from what period Paris or Marseille should be considered as cities. Lyon was the most important city at the time of the Roman occupation, at the beginning of our era.
