All sand filters have an opening through which you can add or remove the sand. BUT why on earth would you want to SAVE it? If the sand needs changing it will be full of gunk and no use for anything but the dump.

Sand should be chnaged every couple of years because it becomes rounded and less effective than new sand. I saved my sand and dried it. I had water tubes that had leaks and were useless. I filled them (one side) with sand and use them to hold down the winter cover. They are heavy and do not store as easily as empty water tubes, but they are very effective and I don't worry about them leaking.

Good luck

  1. Remove the multi port control from the top of the sand filter
  2. remove the sand inside the unit, this can be a next to impossible job to do by hand as they are not really built with this job in mind, however help is at hand with a little venturi pump that hooks onto your garden hose that will suck the sand out of the unit without having to scoop it out see your pool shop about getting hold of one of these.
  3. When its empty replace the sand or whatever media you are using and screw the port back on.

You can also suck the sand out using a plain old shop-vac.

By backwashing. Slowly reverse the flow of water to wash the particles off the sand. The particles will then be suspending in the water above the sand filter, and the water will need to be siphoned out the top of the filter so that the particles do not go back through the sand filter.

Your local pool supplier sells a quart bottle of Filter Cleaner and Degreaser. It works well for both sand and cartridge filters.

Keep in mind (some people will argue this til they are blue in the face. I've been in the business for 12 years so I know a little about what I'm talking about) under a microscope a piece if sand is "star" shaped and over time the points (which the dirt gets trapped in during filter mode) will become worn down. Just as a large rock becomes smaller with water rushing over it in a river, creek etc. When this happens the sand is basically used up and no longer does a good job of filtering the water. At this time the sand will need to removed from the filter and new sand replaced. I change the sand in my commer / public pools every year. Keep in mind i live a coastal area and a lot of beach sand is introduced to public pools. When that sand is vacuumed into the filter it never leaves and decreases filter efficiency. Residential pools average 3-5 years.

Open the filter, place a cup upside down on the thick pipe to prevent sand from entering it (if the filter is new, there may be a cardboard piece included, that is fine as well). Fill with enough water to cover the assembly on the bottom of the filter, make sure the pipe is well-centered, and carefully pour in the sand. Remove the cup, fill the filter with more water, and close it up.

In order to remove sand from a pool it must be vacuumed out with a pool vacuum that hooks up to the skimmer line (suction line) of the pool. If the pool is quite smaill it may not have a skimmer in which case you could get a Spa Vac for about 80 bucks, it works like a giant syringe.

Sand can be removed by disassembling the filer and spraying with a hose. Bear in mind, most pool filters require "sand" to run. They have, in the filter compartment, a fine sand like substance called D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth)

If the filter is not running properly after back wash (still dirty) you may need to replace sand it is very easy but can hard on your back. The basics of changing filter sand are remove valve from top of filter, disconnect any hoses or pipes on filter, lay filter on its side and roll around to loosen up the sand, reach in and remove sand with your hand be careful not to damage the fingers in the filter they are expensive and can be very difficult to replace. After all the sand is out hose out filter and refill with new filter sand hook all hoses and pipes back up and you are done. Good Luck

If you put a sand beach next to your in-ground gunite pool will the sand that ends up in the pool cause problems with the filter?

If you have a sand filter as your filter you may need to remove some of the sand from time to time, But most will be dunped during backwashing. If you have a cartridge filter you may have to clean it more often. If you use D.E. the sand will be dunped when you backwash,Other then that there is no harm. How do you chemically clean the sand in a pool sand filter?

Here's a quick tip on chemically cleaning or killing the algae living in the sand in a sand filter. The next time you shock your swimming pool, poor the shock or bleach in the skimmer. This will provide a very high level of chlorine in the filter for a very short period of time. Long enough to kill the stubborn algae living in the filter but not long enough to hurt your plumbing.
