It is unknown what caused such evolution to occur. We do know that they evolved from some sort of lungfish. The ability for a fish to take oxygen from the air makes it easier to survive in water without much dissolved oxygen. Possible transitional fossils show animals with leg-like fins that could not support the animal's weight on land, but might have been useful for crawling along the bottoms of shallow lakes. The ability for a similar animal with stronger limbs to crawl onto land would have allowed them to escape predators and move to new bodies of water if conditions become unsuitable.
They jump to escape predators which may be chasing them in the ocean. Leaping out of the water - even for a few seconds will confuse the predator.
Yes, Sponge's are the simplest of animals. They don't have a blood system or digest food. All they require is water passing through it's holes in order for it to be maintained. Also Sponge's cannot escape from predators as they are usually connected to a rock.
