Possible transitional fossils show animals with leg-like fins that could not support the animal's weight on land, but might have been useful for crawling along the bottoms of shallow lakes. The ability for a similar animal with stronger limbs to crawl onto land would have allowed them to escape predators and move to new bodies of water if conditions become unsuitable.
