H1N1 (Swine Flu) was initially a disease of only swine (pigs), discovered in the 1930's. This influenza virus mutated into a new form in 2009, called A-H1N1/09, that caused a pandemic. ∙ 12y agoThe original swine flu that only pigs initially got was called influenza A virus subtype H1N1. The original name of the type of swine flu that caused the 2009 pandemic was different depending on which country was using the name. The CDC originally called it Novel H1N1 Swine Flu and then the name became H1N1/09. See the related question below for many of the names it has been called world wide.

∙ 14y agoIt was a combination of the Mexican government, CDC in the US, the news media, the public and various epidemiologists sent by WHO to study the epidemic who first began calling it the swine flu and then the name began to spread as the disease spread.
