Tristan da Cunha is a remote volcanic group of islands in the south Atlantic Ocean, and also the name of the main island of that group. These islands were named after Portuguese explorer Tristão da Cunha, who first sighted them in 1506. Although the islands are home for many flora and fauna, they are most known for the large number of seabirds that breed there. The breeding bird species on the islands include Wandering, Yellow-nosed and the Sooty Albatrosses, Great Shearwaters, and Antarctic Terns. According to Oceanwide-expeditions.com, the "Rockhopper Penguin is the only penguin species breeding on the islands. Several bird species are endemic including the Tristan Albatross and the Inaccessible Island Rail, the world's smallest flightless bird."
