Very few animals live in the Australian deserts, as there is insufficient vegetation to sustain them. However, some animals which live in semi-arid deserts are:

  • goanna, including the perentie
  • red kangaroo
  • bilby
  • thorny devil
  • various species of native geckos
  • numerous snakes such as the taipan and death adder
  • bearded dragon

All Australian native animals are protected by law. Therefore, the only ones you can eat are the non-native animals, such as rock pigeons, brumbies, feral pigs, rabbits and hares, water buffalo and camels.

There are many animals and birds which live in the Australian rainforests. Bear in mind that rainforests in the north of the country are tropical rainforests, and they range to cool-temperate rainforests in Tasmania, so the species vary.

Australian rainforest creatures include the following (but this is not an exhaustive list):
