ALL INFANTRYMEN (Soldiers and Marines) "must" carry water, ammunition, and weapon (rifle or machinegun). Those are the basics. Those above listed items alone can weigh nearly a 100 pounds. A military rifle (M-1 Garand) can weigh nearly 10 pounds, a machinegun 20 pounds; 300 rounds of ammo (.308 or 30-06) 10 to 15 pounds. A one quart canteen (water) will last only one trip up one hilltop while carrying heavy equipment (guns & ammo). Grunts will have to carry MORE than one canteen. In the Vietnam War we carried sometimes, 7 to 10 one quart canteens strapped outside and carried inside our rucksacks...or the NEW two quart canteen; three or five of them. Ten quarts of water is HEAVY to carry. Now add that to the guns and ammo. 7 luxury items might be: blanket/sleeping bag, entrenching tool (shovel), bayonet (knife), rifle cleaning kit, gun oil, FOOD (C Rations back then), and steel helmet. Personal items: In Vietnam, 90 out of 100 grunts carried cigarettes and a lighter.
