They were laws that mandated racial segregation in the South following Reconstruction, beginning in 1876 and continuing until 1965. Although initially declared constitutional, they were repealed during the Civil Rights Movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
They established 'separate but equal' public facilities for African-Americans (colored) which were almost always inferior to those provided for 'white' persons. Many were clearly marked as "whites only" and "colored only."
Notably, they included separate schools, separate restrooms, and separate entrances.
They were named for a character originally presented by a white entertainer in blackface makeup.
The Jim Crow laws were enacted partly because of the earlier failure of the Black Codes. The Black Codes were laws designed to prevent freed slaves from exercising political and economic power in the South, following the Civil War. They used various methods to disenfranchise African-Americans. The enacting of these laws led to outrage in Congress, which began the takeover of the South called Radical Reconstruction.
