Teddy Roosevelt heard from his friends about Taft's weak leadership. The tipping point was that Taft fired Gifford Pinchot, the head of the National Park Service under Teddy's administration because he said the Secretary of the Interior was corrupted by the oil industry. It seems Taft didn't care about the environment. Despite this, Taft continued much of Teddy's agenda including having the 16th and 17th Amendments get ratified in his administration. But Teddy was mad enough that he ran in 1916 against Taft, splitting the vote and resulting in Wilson's victory, a victory for a man that was a bit conservative in some views even though he was a progressive as well.
