The colonists in America were resentful of several actions taken by Britain, among them the Sugar Act of 1964 (which raised taxes on a number of items), the Quartering Act of 1765 (which required certain colonies to provide food/housing for British soldiers), and the Stamp Act of 1765 (which mandated stamps certifying payment of tax on some documents/papers). The Stamp Act was eventually repealed in 1766 after a series of boycotts but British parliament passed in the same session to Declatory Act, which affirmed parliament's right to bind the colonies in all cases. The colonists also resented that they had no representation in the parliament that created their laws and taxes ("no taxation without representation").

1766 was before the more obvious causes of the Revolutionary War (the Townshed Acts, Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, and Intolerable Acts). It is important to remember that at the time British citizens in Britain were actually paying quite a bit more taxes than Americans. The British had just come off the French and Indian War, which they fought on behalf of the colonists, and they needed to raise taxes to pay off the war debt.
