Things you can do by yourself about a problem:
Example problem:
An 18-year old male recently graduated from HS. He applied for jobs in his neighborhood, because his 1998 car finally died. One company offered him a job, but at an office many miles away. It would take him over an hour each way to walk it. There are no buses. The company withholds 1 paycheck, so he will not get paid for 3 weeks, so he'll have no money for a while. He does own a bicycle.
Reviewing his own resources, he feels he has little to help himself. His main option is his bike.
As he thinks about outside resources, he recalls his older cousin lives nearly half-way to the site where the 18-yr old wants to be employed. He also heard that the ADX Agency sometimes helps unemployed people become employed. He can't ask his parents to help because they are both ill.
He decides to call his older cousin. His proposed plan: Ride his bike to his cousin's house where he can leave it each morning. Then, his cousin can drop him off on the cousin's way to his job. They will return to the cousin's house after work, and he will ride his bike home. He offers to pay $2.00 a day for gasoline costs. He will pay what he owes from his first paycheck, then pay once a week. The cousin says yes, except on Friday they need to leave an hour earlier for the cousin to get to work on time. In the meantime, the 18-yr old will also contact the ADX Agency to see if they will help him get a car--he has saved $500 so far toward one. The ADX agency can't help but gives him a referral to AABB Agency who agrees to help but he must stay employed for 3 months before he can apply for car assistance. Now, he has a plan and can follow through on it. He buys a raincoat with a hood to wear--just in case it rains when he has to bike. His parents let him pack lunches to take to work. After he's been working 3 months, he also agrees to help with food costs at $40 a month. He sets out to work, and his plan works out well.
