What other ways could Truman defeat Japan with out using atomic bombs?

What led US to the drop of atomic bomb during Pearl Harbor?

They didn't drop it during Pearl Harbor, The attack on Peal Harbour happened in 1941, The bomb was dropped twice in 1945 The Japanese Navy launched airplanes that attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in a surprise raid on the morning of December 7, 1941. That attack brought the United States into World War II. The USA did not use nuclear weapons (an atomic bomb) at Pearl Harbor, or anywhere else, until 1945, the year the war ended. The Japanese did not have nuclear weapons. The USA and its allies fought Japan in the Pacific, both on land and at sea. The United States military fought the entire war to capture islands and places of military importance to Japan and to end the war. Many tens of thousands of American and Japanese soldiers, sailors, and Marines were killed. The USA moved closer and closer to Japan's shore, and by 1945 the USA had fought its way to within a short distance from mainland Japan, close enough to launch an invasion of soldiers into Japan. Military planners in the USA believed that as many as one million American military personnel might be killed by the Japanese in such an invasion, and that millions of Japanese would also be killed. The atomic bomb was a brand new weapon in the summer of 1945, and it had never been used before, by any country. Only the USA had an atomic bomb at that time. US President Harry Truman believed that if the USA dropped one or more atomic bombs on Japan, then Japan would surrender to prevent further damage to Japan and to its people. President Truman also believed that fewer people would die from the bomb than would be killed on both sides if the USA invaded Japan. In July, 1945, the USA and its allies demanded that the Japanese surrender. The Japanese Emperor Hirohito refused to surrender. Because Japan refused to surrender, President Truman ordered that an atomic bomb be dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. That bomb killed an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 people, and wounded that many more. Yet, Japan still refused to surrender. President Truman then ordered a second attack, to drop another atomic bomb on a different Japanese city. On August 9, 1945, the USA dropped a second, more powerful atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki, Japan. The blast at Nagasaki created a temperature of 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and winds of 624 miles per hour, on the ground. 40,000 to 75,000 people were estimated to have been killed by that bomb. A few days later, Emperor Hirohito ordered Japan's surrender. The use of the atomic bombs has been debated since the first bombs were used. The Americans believed that the atomic bombs actually saved lives in the long run by making an invasion of Japan unnecessary. Some scholars disagree, stating the Soviet Union's surprise attack with 1.6 million troops upon the Japanese troops occupying eastern Asia, the collapse of Nazi Germany, and the naval blockade of Japan, would have all combined to cause Japan's surrender even if no atomic bomb had been used. All the world recognized the vast destructive power of nuclear bombs, and no nuclear bombs have been used by any nation since 1945.

In your opinion should America have used the atomic bomb?

From a purely military view, the answer must be a strong yes, it did bring the war to an accelerated end. The moral and ethical position will be debated for a long time, and the pros and cons will never satisfy everyone.

How many times has an atomic bomb been dropped?

The US dropped 50 atomic bombs from airplanes between 1945 and 1962 (2 in combat on Japan, 48 in test shots). Over 1000 were detonated in other ways in test shots between 1945 and 1992. The USSR, UK, and France also dropped atomic bombs from airplanes and detonated many in other ways in test shots (but never used any in combat).

Why was there a controversy on dropping the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

There still IS a controversy 65 years later regarding the issue of not dropping the bombs and dropping the bombs. The reason the controversy exists is because of the severity of the damage to the people. There were people disintegrated, burned, injured in many ways and thousands died from radiation poisoning. The way the people died was horrendous and painful AND LASTING. Some say it would have been better not to drop the bombs, to not usher the world into the atomic age. Trust me it would have happened eventually because the Japanese, Russians and Germans were all working on atomic energy and bombs. Stalin had a spy in the US atomic bomb building program. There was no way of avoiding it. The Japanese had developed a dirty bomb but had not come up with the full on bomb as the US had. Those who were for the dropping of the bombs were the millions of Red Army Soldiers, the US and Australian Soldiers and Marines, the US Navy sailors and the millions of Japanese who would have died in the invasion of Japan had it occurred. Many of the soldiers and Marines had bountifully thanked the makers of the bomb and the crews that dropped the bomb because it saved their lives. There were even millions of Japanese who were glad the war ended because of the bombs. They wanted the war to end but their military leaders would not stop and the Japanese did not have a public voice to influence them to stop. They would not even listen to the Emperor to stop the war. The Emperor had to stop the war himself. You have noticed that no one has ever used another atomic missile on another country yet. That is because the new atomic bombs would kill off 1/3 of the world with one nuclear missile, and it could kill the people who launch the bombs. No one wants to die from today's nuclear missiles. Thankfully, many have been dismantled, especially the really old ones.
