People have changed the environment both for better and for worse.

What is worse? The primary categories where we've had the worst impact have to do with the way we use energy; our use of toxic chemicals; and our use of Natural Resources.

For the past almost 300 years, our primary source of energy has been fossil fuels, like coal, oil and natural gas. Fossil fuels contain a lot of carbon; when they're burned they release carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide wafts up into the atmosphere, where it creates a sort of gaseous blanket that hovers over the earth, warming the air temperatures below. This effect is called global warming, and it has led to so much "climate change" that temperatures on earth have increased significantly. As a result, the polar ice caps are melting, sea level is rising, and we're experiencing extreme weather events. Pests that cause disease and destroy crops are affecting more and more regions of the world. Whole communities and even countries are being impacted because the environment is being altered due to climate change.

Our use of toxic chemicals has expanded significantly, as well. These chemicals cause mutations in animals and plants and can affect people significantly. Birth defects, infertility, and cancer have all been linked to exposure to toxic chemicals in common household products.

As population increases, so does our demand for natural resources, meaning everything from water and trees to fish. Many communities no longer have enough safe drinking water. Forests are being cut down at such a rapid rate that we're losing the many benefits they provide. Fisheries worldwide are dwindling.

What is better? Fortunately, we are beginning to transition away from fossil fuels to renewable forms of energy, like solar and wind. We're also improving the way we use energy, so we use less energy to accomplish the same task. Technology is helping, too. We now have cars that run completely on electricity rather than gasoline; more mass transit; car sharing systems; and other ways to reduce the amount of energy we use.

As awareness of toxic chemicals grows, many people are using their consumer clout to choose products and services that avoid dangerous ingredients in favor of those that are benign. The do-it-yourself (DIY) movement has also really taken off, with many consumers making their own simpler products to avoid those in the marketplace that contain questionnable compounds.

Demand for natural resources is still on the rise because human population is increasing. However, many companies are being smarter about how they manufacture products so that they are using fewer natural resources not only to make what they sell, but to package and ship it as well. At the same time, a new "sharing economy" has sprung up. People in many comunities are actually buying fewer new things in favor of sharing and swapping what they own with those who have what they need.

Answer 1 Three ways we have changed in the environment is that we are growing fresh, nutritious food, plant trees and saving water.

Answer 2The US people changed the environment through:
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from coal power plants
  • Heavy metal emissions (especially Mercury) that pollutes lakes and poison aquatic life (fish in particular)
  • Global warming and ozone depletion
