Illinois' western border is the Mississippi River and the southern border is the Ohio and Wabash Rivers. Illinois is 390 miles north to south and 210 miles east to west. The state is relatively flat about 600 feet above sea level. Cairo is the lowest point and Charles Mound is the highest point. The southern part has coal mining. The central is prairie turned farmland.
