Similarites: The flags, the accents (although the Australian accent is far more pronounced,) the fondness for barbecues, and the over-attachment to sheep.

Differences: Australia has hundreds of creatures that will kill you whereas New Zealand doesn't have any, parts of Australia have scorching sunshine all year whereas New Zealand has rainy winters, Australia has kangaroos whereas New Zealand has kiwis, and Australians call flip-flops thongs whereas New Zealanders call them jandals.

New Zealand's South Island and Scotland have similar terrains. A lot of the early settlers of New Zealand were Scottish because it reminded them of home.
