They are mainly known for Mary and their many saints.

Roman Catholic AnswerCatholics are known for many things depending on your point of view and what you are looking for. One of the most famous things that Catholics have been known for, historically, has been their commitment to their religion, their many religious (priests, monks, nuns, brothers, and sisters) and their commitment to evangelization. Great religious orders have arisen over the centuries to help men and women to live good lives (to work out their salvation) and to do many good works. One need only look at the Corporal and Spiritual works of mercy:

The Spiritual Works of Mercy

To admonish the sinner,

To instruct the ignorant,

To counsel the doubtful,

To comfort the sorrowful,

To bear wrongs patiently,

To forgive all injuries,

To pray for the living and the dead.

The Corporal Works of Mercy

Matt 25:31

To feed the hungry,

To give drink to the thirsty,

To clothe the naked,

To visit the prisoners,

To shelter the homeless

To visit the sick,

To bury the dead

To give alms to the poor.

Catholic religious have gone all through the world establishing schools, churches, hospitals; they have ministered to the poor, established prison ministries, etc. And, most impressive, they have been doing this for nearly twenty centuries! From St. Benedict in the sixth century establishing the Benedictines, who to this day run schools, colleges, and universities around the world. To Mother Theresa's Sisters of Charity taking care of the dying, feeding the hungry, taking people off the streets to help them. And in all of this, giving up any hope of having a personal family life, gathering a fortune in this world, or achieving fame - although both Mother Theresa and St. Benedict, did eventually become quite famous.
