Homotrophs are organisms that can provide their own food. An example would be a plant. They undergo photosynthesis, so they don't have to actually eat anything. Everything it needs is made by cells within it.

It seems to me that you are confused. What you described is called an Autotroph. β€˜Homotroph’ is a term that simply does not exist, but if it did, I would hope it was used as a more sophisticated term for cannibals.Β

A heterotroph is any organism that requires organic subtrates in order to survive.

This contrasts with autotrophs, such as plants, algae and some bacteria, that can use energy from sunlight (photosynthesis) or inorganic compounds to produce organic compounds such as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins from inorganic carbon dioxide.

Humans are a good example of heterotrophs. That's why we eat a lot of plants.

It is referring to the consumers in the food chain, such as animals, fungi and many bacteria. More scientifically, it's the life form that uses organic carbon for growth. This contrasts with autotrophs, which are the producers, mainly plants, in the food chain.
