There are commercial mines like the Lucky Friday that engage in deep mining of silver, zinc, some gold, and some copper. I have an acquaintance who pays his yearly property taxes from his little placer gold mining setup. Also present are opal, beryl, and other semi-precious gems.
Northern Idaho offers big-game hunting for cougar, grizzly bears, black bears, wolf, elk, and moose, along with excellent bird hunting for Ringneck pheasant, Hungarian pheasant, grouse, ducks, and quail.
In terms of ecotourism, Idaho has more forest service cover per total area than anywhere else in the United States. In terms of mining, Idaho and the Indian stretch of the Himalayan Mountains are the sole locations of star garnets. But rare six-pointed star garnets can only be found in Idaho. And in terms of the science and technology industries, dynamic random access memory chips aka DRAM are only made by Micron Technology Inc in Boise, Idaho.
