California is claimed as a U.S. possession. 1846-1847 The Donner party is trapped in the Sierra Nevadas and 40 people die. 1847 Mexican Californians accept U.S. rule in the Cahuenga Capitulation. 1848 Gold is discovered on John A. Sutter's land. Mexico cedes California to the United States. 1849 The gold rush brings thousands of prospectors to California. 1850 California enters the Union as the 31st state (September 9). 1864 The Modoc are removed to a reservation in Oregon. 1869 California is linked with the East by the first transcontinental railroad. 1873 Battle near Tule Lake ends the Modoc War in northern California. 1877 Anti-Chinese riots encourage the formation of the Workingmen's Party of California. 1879 The second and current constitution of California is adopted. 1882 The U.S. Congress halts Chinese immigration for ten years. 1906 San Francisco segregates Japanese schoolchildren; President Theodore Roosevelt arranges desegregation in exchange for voluntary limits on Japanese immigration. 1906 The San Francisco earthquake and fire occur. 1910 Hiram Johnson is elected governor. 1924 Japanese immigration is ended. 1930s Work begins on the Central Valley Project. 1942 President Franklin Roosevelt signs an order removing all people of Japanese descent from the West Coast, including U.S. citizens. 1950s The California State Water Project begins. 1962 California becomes the most populous state in the nation. 1965 Blacks riot in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. 1966 Ronald Reagan is elected governor. 1975 Migrant farm workers obtain the right to collective bargaining. 1978 Voters approve Proposition 13, a constitutional amendment that drastically reduces local property tax rates in the state. 1988 The U.S. Congress passes legislation compensating Japanese Americans interned during World War II.
