Inexpensive FlowersAs a florist for 10 years, I have heard this question a million times. Inexpensive doesn't necessarily mean carnations, daisies and the such. Even though flowers are grown year round and world wide, I believe in the seasons of things. As tomatoes are great in summer, in the winter they really suck. So is the nature of flowers. Springtime is good for bulb flowers, tulips, hyacinths, freesia in addition to stock, roses and lilies. Summer is great for sunflowers, solidago (an aster), liatris. Look for bright and colorful during this time. Fall is good for the foliages, berries, and grasses (wheat, barley). Winter is good for greens. I mean fresh smelly greens. There are a variety of flowers that are cool and are essentially inexpensive year round for example; alstroemeria (they last a long time), stock (very fragrant), and of course roses. Summer and fall are the times to buy roses cheap. The growers are gearing up for Christmas and selling everything cheap. One rose stem should be around $2.20 to $2.50 retail. When you are thinking about inexpesive, remember the vase. We have to charge for them and that is usually double the wholesale price. For a basic vase arrangement for $10.00 I would use 2 snapdragons, 2 alstroemeria, 1 or 2 roses (depending on the bud size) or a lily. Holdidays (Xmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day) growers and wholesaler jack the prices up way high so try to avoid that time.
