Intel and AMD chips are for computers to amke them better, so think of it like a boost to the computer, so it can prosseses things faster
AMD chips have consitently had issues in many brands, particularly HP notebooks and desktops. For whatever reason, there always seems to be a problem with systems that have AMD processors. Intel on the other hand is consistently superior, even if the specs don't often match up with AMD. Bottom line is that Intel has the quality assurance and design to keep pumping out solid chips. AMD doesn't.
The main two manufacturers are INTEL and AMD. The 4th quoter results of 2008: INTEL - 80.96% AMD - 10.6%
AMD is the ONLY compeditor of Intel AMD
By chips, I will assume you mean CPU's. Intel and AMD currently dominate the CPU market and that shows no sign of changing. ARM Holdings design all the chips currently used in smartphones, but they don't manufacture them, just like Nvidia.
