The Rial is the current currency of Iran, Oman and Yemen. It has been popular throughout the Arab world, also formerly used in Morocco (until replaced by the dirham in 1921) and Tunisia (until replaced in 1891 by the franc, and later the dinar).
It was derived from the Spanish word 'real', which is the current currency of Brazil and former currency of several Hispanic/Portuguese nations. Similarly named currencies also include the Cambodian riel, and the Qatari and Saudi riyal, all derived from 'real', and furthermore, 'rey', meaning 'king' in the Spanish language.
