Silage.
Fodder is just another term for forage or green silage. Silage is feed that is highly nutritious that dairy cattle need to produce milk and meet their maintenance needs as well. Dairy cattle have higher nutrient needs than most livestock except chickens and pigs, and this need must be met with green fodder or high quality forage in the form of silage and/or grain.

Silage, hay and grain is often mixed together in a tub grinder or an automatic mixer. Different portions of silage, hay and grain is mixed together for an adequate ration mix for dairy cows, with not too much hay or too much grain, but just enough of everything to have plenty of calcium, protein, fibre, and other nutrients that a dairy cow needs in her diet.
Because of the population Maryland has become a major producer of fluid milk and dairy products. That has caused a major shift in acerage to provide hay, forage and silage for the dairy herds.

Dairy cows, even though they are not lactating, still have higher nutritional demands than dry beef cows, so baleage (a form of silage) is a recommended feed to feed to them.

The basic diet of a dairy cow is a TMR (total mixed ration) this ration usually consists of soybean, silage, and hay (alfa alfa), this ration is mixed in a large machine and delivered to the manger for the cow to eat.
