The President may sign a bill into a law, veto it, or ignore it. If the bill is ignored, and Congress is in session, the bill becomes law automatically after ten days. If the bill is ignored and Congress is not in session, then the bill does not become law. This is often referred to as the "Pocket Veto."

When the President receives a bill he can choose to sign it and make it a law or veto it. He can also hold it for 10 days and if congress is no longer in session then it becomes a pocket veto. If congress is still in session after those 10 days then it automatically becomes a law.

He can sign it - making it law.

He can veto it - and it goes back to congress.

He can simply let it lay on his desk. Past a certain interval (I think it is ten days), it goes back to Congress. This is called a "pocket veto".

If it is within a few days of the end of the congressional session, he can let it lie on his desk, and

it dies with the end of the congressional session - and has to be re-introduced in the next session all over again.

The President can either 1) sign the bill or 2) veto the bill. if he signs it, it becomes a law. if he veto it, it is either killed permanently, or congress can override the veto by a 2/3 vote from BOTH chambers...House of Representatives and Senate.
