There are many programs executed on a computer like
the I/O file
The Kernel
The DLL's(windows)
The file explorer
The GUI files
Drivers for hardware
Your installed programs
etc..
The kernel is obviously the most relevant part of a system. However, sometimes it is considered as a separate part of it. For example, consider the GNU/Linux operating system: Linux is a popular kernel, but GNU has been designed to run on other kernels as well, for example Solaris, BSD. Quite commonly, kernels have loadable modules that perform specific tasks. While a kernel module is actually a computer program, the term program is more often used to refer to utilities that can be invoked directly by a user.
The kernel schedules processes, coordinates access to the hardware, maintains he file system, and more. However, one cannot actually use a computer with just a kernel: one needs terminals, shells, and possibly a graphic environment. Again, the GNU operating system is very didactic because it allows access to all the sources, letting people examine the details of what each program does. GNU programs are organized into packages, i.e. grouped by functionality. The package list includes, for example, coreutils (basic filesystem and related utilities), Binutils (GNU loader, linker, etcetera), Bash (the shell), GCC (the compiler collection), Termutils (for controlling terminals), but also other stuff whose necessity in a system is not impelling, such as gnubg (for playing backgammon). Actually, there is no upper limit for the completeness of an operating system, so any program that its distribution includes may be considered part of it.
There are countless amounts of them, but the most used ones are; Anti virus, World of Warcraft, Photoshop, Microsoft Word/Excel/Power Point, many more it could go on for days.

Your RAM does not go anywhere, but is only used by programs. As you close programs, the ram the programs was using becomes available again. If your computer is running slow, try cutting off or uninstalling unneeded programs. The more you have running at any given time the slower your computer will be. If the programs that use up all your ram are on your startup list go to < Start - All Programs - Startup > and remove the programs that you do not want starting with windows. They will still be on your computer so if your have no need of them at all, uninstall them to help increase speed.
