∙ 13y agoBreast augmentation is a form of cosmetic surgery popular in the United States, Europe, and many other countries across the world. The surgery involves the insertion of breast implants into the breasts to alter their size and shape.
There are many different varieties of breast implants that can differ in size, shape, and texture. However, breast implants are almost always primarily composed of either one of two materials. These materials are saline and silicone. Both of these materials though are encapsulated in a layer of silicone polymer.
Currently, surgery to inset breast implants filled with saline is the most common. Saline based breast implants were first invented in France in 1964. The idea was to find a way to insert breast implants into the breasts by using a relatively small incision. This is accomplished by the empty shell of a breast implant composed of an elastic silicone polymer being inserted first. After the shell is inserted into the breast, the shell will be filled with sea water also known as saline. Due to certain regulations enacted against the use of silicone breast implants in the United States, saline based implants have became the most popular breast implant used in the US.
Silicone based breast implants were invented in 1961 in Texas. The first successful silicone breast augmentation took place in 1962. Unlike saline based breast implants, silicone based implants are already filled with a gel made of silicone before they are inserted into the breasts. This will leave a larger scar. However, silicone based implants are the most popular choice for breast implants outside of the United States. This is because it is believed that silicone gel implants appear more natural and have more realistic feel once inserted into the breasts.
However, silicone gel breast implants have had a long history of controversy. In the 1970s, the implants became infamous for their ability to leak silicone gel into the body after being inserted into the breasts. Advances in the technology have lessened this risk. Still, questions have been raised in the United States regarding silicone breast implants’ link to things such as cancer, neurological conditions, and rheumatologic issues. So far, no study has proven a direct link to these disorders. However, due to the questions raised and certain sanctions put in place by the federal government, saline based implants still remain the most common kind of breast implant used in the United States.
