The South Pole is at 90 degrees S latitude and is located on the continent of Antarctica. Antarctica is a continent of approximately 14,000,000 sq km. It is surrounded by the Southern Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. There are no countries on Antarctica and no permanent population. Many countries have scientific research stations on Antarctica. Because Antarctica is a "polar" region, there is no precipitation, it has no lakes or rivers and is in fact the driest continent. Average temperatures in the Antarctic interior get down to -70 degrees Celsius during the winter months and -35 degrees Celsius in the warmer months. The coastal temperatures are much warmer with a range of -15 to -32 Celsius in Winter and -5 to +5 Celsius in Summer. The interior of Antarctica is considered the world's driest desert because the extreme cold freezes water vapour out of the air. Annual snowfall on the polar plateau is equivalent to less than 5 cm of rain. Antarctica has some of the strongest winds on earth, with some winds reaching 320 kph.

The Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) experienced the world's lowest temperature when -89.6 degrees Celsius was recorded on 21st July, 1983, at Vostok Station at an elevation of 3488 metres. The Antarctic ice sheet is the largest in the world with about 13.72 million sq km of permanent ice representing about 90% of the worlds ice and is over 4 km thick in places.

The ozone layer above Antarctica has a hole in it. I'm not 100% sure though.

meggee:-

1. Antarctica is the fifth largest continent

2. it covers 10% of the earth's surface

3. it has an area of 5.4 million square miles

4. it has effectively one day and one night because the sun is in the sky for six months of the year and the continent is in darkness for the other six months.

5. there are no indigenous people to Antarctica although scientists do life there for the sunny six months so they can do research.

if you want to know more about the south pole i would recommend that you type 'living at the south pole' into google search and it is about the third option. another good site is http://www.udel.edu/PR/UDaily/2007/jun/pole061507.html and also Ask jeeves.com will answer more specific questions. i hope this improved the answer as i am only twelve years old but i am doing the Antarctic as a school project at dartford grammar school for girls (which is a really great school and if you get an oppotunity to see it take it)thankyou. Your welcome! (i'm not the same person who wrote thankyou) hehe

-- Antarctica may be covered with snow and ice, but it's actually a desert ... it gets only a few inches of new snow in a year. The thousands of feet of ice that bury it are the accumulation of many many years, that never melted. The blizzards there are mostly just old stuff blowing around. -- Anywhere south of the Antarctic Circle, the sun will stay up more than 24 hours during some part of the time between September 21 and March 21. The farther south of the Antarctic Circle you go, the longer that time will be. Right at the South Pole, the sun never sets during that whole 6 months. -- Of course, the other half of the year is even worse in the same places. Anywhere south of the Antarctic Circle, the sun will stay down more than 24 hours during some part of the time between March 21 and September 21. The farther south of the Antarctic Circle you go, the longer that time will be. Right at the South Pole, the sun never rises during that whole 6 months. The Antarctic continenet is almost (but not quite) completely south of the Circle.

The Arctic is where you find polar bears. The Antarctic is where you will won't find polar bears. But there are plenty of cute little penguins, and some big 'uns (about 1m tall) down the south pole way.
