Emphysema is a COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that has serious and permanent changes to the air sacs in our lungs, called alveoli. These tiny sacs collapse and loose their ability to transfer oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.
It's part of the diseases grouped under COPD because they have the same pathophysiology. It's caused by an obstruction leading to too much carbon dioxide in the alveoli. Emphysema is an obstructive respiratory disease.
In the latter stages of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), complications can occur including diet and exercise-related problems such as weight loss, osteoporosis and muscle atrophy. Advanced cases can result in respiratory failure and oxygen depletion with excess carbon dioxide in the blood causing headaches or dizziness. As the heart works harder to pump blood, it can suffer serious damage resulting in pulmonary hypertension, heart disease or heart failure. The extremities may suffer from edema in ankle swelling.

Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath due to over-inflation of the alveoli (air sacs in the lung). In people with emphysema, the lung tissue involved in exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) is impaired or destroyed. Emphysema is included in a group of diseases called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD (pulmonary refers to the lungs). Emphysema is called an obstructive lung disease because airflow on exhalation is slowed or stopped because over-inflated alveoli do not exchange gases when a person breaths due to little or no movement of gases out of the alveoli.
Blood gas analysis is used to analyze the blood gases levels in the body such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and ph levels in the blood, and the test is called ABG Test (Arterial Blood Gas Test). If u are facing problems related to lungs, asthma, COPD(chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and cystic fibrosis then your doctor will suggest taking ABG Test.
Pulmonary artery 1. No oxygen 2. A lot of carbon dioxide Pulmonary vein 1. Lots of oxygen 2. No carbon dioxide
When you have pulmonary disease, you may fail to give out carbon dioxide. So the percentage of carbon dioxide increase in your blood. That is the indicator of the severity of the pulmonary disease.
Pulmonary function
No, emphysema is not a form of cancer. Emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that is characterized by the destruction of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. This leads to difficulty breathing, as the damaged air sacs are unable to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide effectively. Emphysema is usually caused by long-term exposure to irritants, such as tobacco smoke, pollution, and chemical fumes. It is a progressive disease, which means that it gets worse over time. While emphysema does not directly cause cancer, people with emphysema are at increased risk of developing lung cancer due to the damage caused to their lungs by the disease. Additionally, smoking is a major risk factor for both emphysema and lung cancer.
Well If you remember when you breath out you release the CO into the air. If your breathing is not regular and you are not able to remove the extra CO then there could be a problem inside your lungs. Like Bronchitis, Emphysema, or common allergies. Best to check with your doctor.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD) is a type of obstructive lung disease .Symptoms Shortness of breath, cough, Sputum productionMain cause is Tobacco smoking, also Air pollution and genetics play a smaller role..Long term exposure to irritants causes an inflammatory response in the lungs resulting in the narrowing of small airways and breakdown of lung tissues..This creates difficulty in breathing, worsening gas transfer. Gradually low oxygen levels and High carbon dioxide levels in blood..Low oxygen levels leads to narrowing of arteries in the lungs, there to increased blood pressure..Gradually this leads to death..Treatment for this disease include quitting smoking, vaccination, rehabilitation. In short, every organs and their functions in human body are inter related..If one got damaged, it affects the functioning of the other. No single disease causes sudden death.. It leads to malfunctioning of other organs ..Eat healthy food, proper exercise..and Be happy..
