There are Gel nails which are put on proffesionally in a nail shop, there are acrylic nails, which can also be put on at a shop, you can also buy kits from shops that you can do yourself, to get them done at the nail shops it costs about £40 for the first one, and about £20 after to keep rebuilding them, you can also get your basic plastic glue on ones

Are different amounts of force needed to pound nails into different kinds of wood?

Yes. Woods from different trees have different densities and also grain characteristics affect the force needed to drive nails. Driving a nail across grain requires more force than driving a nail into the end of the grain in the same piece of wood. Other factors also affect the force needed to drive nails, including the dryness or age of the wood.
