Some expensive woods are bird's eye maple, teak, bubinga, jatoba, meranti, sapele, tigerwood and many others.
Yes, Meranti is a hard wood which hails from the Philippines and other eastern tropical type areas. It has similar characteristics and appearance to Mahogany but is much cheaper and more readily available. It works and finishes nicely and is a good choice for all manner of joinery, cabinet making and a myriad of other uses.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of wood preservation
Painting wood as finishing would not be durable especially if the wood is used on floors.

Personally, I would prefer meranti to provide sufficient shade by a window. The reasoning is that oaks can provide shade; however, they can get scruffy and have some branches here and less there to where you could never tell where they are going to grow. The meranti grows to where it provides shade all in the circumference zone.
The disadvantages of Ash wood is that it is not as rot proof or water resistant as other hard woods. If it is left untreated, it will rot quickly.
There can set it on fire!
