With the end of the US Civil War large numbers of US Citizens migrated to the Oregon Territory to start a new life. Russian traders had created settlements in the Pacific Northwest and the US Government wanted no conflict in the west. By purchasing the Alaskan Colony from Russia the US gained not only the vast property to the north but also any Russian claims that might exist in what is now Oregon and Washington state.
