Their hooves adapt to be as strong as the ground they run on.

They will not sleep unless they have a herd to protect them.

The lead stallion does not actually lead the herd. He serves more as a protector while the lead mare actually leads the herd to safety, food and water.

Both fillies and colts are kicked out of the herd when they reach sexual maturity-most people only know about the colts being kicked out, but the fillies do, too to prevent in-breeding.

This is a sad fact but makes perfect sense- Most of the time when a stallion steals another stallion's herd, he will often kill the babies. This is so that only the best stallion's babies survive.

The term "wild horse" is also used colloquially to refer to free roaming herds of feral horses such as the Mustang in the United States, the Brumby in Australia, and many others. These feral horses are untamed members of the domestic horse subspecies (Equus ferus caballus), and should not be confused with the two truly "wild" horse subspecies.

The wild horse (Equus ferus) is a species of the genus Equus, which includes as subspecies the domesticated horse as well as the undomesticated Tarpan and Przewalski's horse.
