The USN lost one large fleet carrier, the USS Lexington; plus the destroyer Sims and one oiler. The IJN lost one light carrier. The Coral Sea was history's first clash of carriers, and the carriers were called flat-tops by US airmen. A USN dive bomber pilot transmitted this famous signal to his headquarters after sinking the IJN light carrier. "Scratch one flat-top!"
my memories are of alot of noise and flying pieces of flesh removing metal, a shell exploded nearby my post which caused me severe concusion. I lost 12 mates that sad day. War is for machines, not mankind.
1. History's first clash of aircraft carriers 2. Navies learned how to fight naval battles IN THE AIR 3. US strategic victory (IJN aborted their mission) 4. Australia would no longer be threatened for the rest of WWII
